Project Nur Presents Muslim Film Festival Screening: 'They Call me Muslim'
BOSTON, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Project Nur will be hosting a screening of "They Call me Muslim" at Simmons College. The event will take place on Thursday October 29, 2009 at the Linda K Paresky Conference Center from 7 pm to 9 pm. This film follows the story of two young Muslim women who have been stripped of their religious freedom. One of the girls is condemned by society for not wearing hijab (the veil), while the other is banned from wearing hijab in public. This story exposes the dilemma millions of Muslim women face around the world, on a daily basis. The film dives into the heart of the controversy of whether the hijab should be a choice or a command dictated by a "religious" regime and whether it should be forced in a "religious" country or banned in a "modern" country.
This film is part of Project Nur Muslim Film Festival and serves to expose the problems Muslim women continue to face in controlling their own images and bodies.
Project Nur ("PN") is a "new light on campus" that creates a distinct and alternative Muslim voice: a civic identity grounded in pluralism and moderate thinking and action, one that dispels the perception of a monolithic Muslim voice. PN is a student-led initiative of the American Islamic Congress which was created after 9/11 as a non-religious, civic initiative challenging increasingly negative perceptions of Muslims by advocating responsible leadership and understanding. PN emphasizes civic action, and does so with the goal of forging a cohesive and mutually respectful multicultural community. It is PN's belief that only in taking action with different people, addressing issues affecting all humans, do we truly come to understand the meaning and reality of co-existence. As such, PN is a multi-cultural and diverse community of civic-minded university students who are committed towards the advancement of human rights, civil rights, social justice, tolerance, understanding, and co-existence.
