Chronic hepatitis B is called a "silent killer" because it often causes no symptoms while it damages the liver. The disease can be diagnosed with a simple blood test and treated with new medicines - yet as many as two-thirds of Asian Americans with chronic hepatitis B do not know they are infected, putting their health and that of their loved ones at risk. The B HERE campaign is sponsored by Gilead Sciences, a maker of medicines for chronic hepatitis B, with support from campus partners Sigma Phi Omega and Kappa Delta Phi.
Key Facts -- Hepatitis B is the second-leading cause of human cancer after tobacco. -- The virus that causes hepatitis B is 100 times more easily transmitted than the AIDS virus. -- Asian Americans are 20 times more likely to have the disease compared to the overall U.S. population.
