Filmmaker Says the Child Support System is Broken: Money and Emotional Issues Are Addressed in Documentary

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Is the current child support system malfunctioning?

Angelo Lobo, producer and director of the full-length documentary "Support? System Down," says, "Yes."

Lobo's timely film examines problems within the nation's child support system and shows why there is a need for immediate reform.

One recent child support case, among many, supports the film's premise that something is seriously wrong with the system. According to CNN (8/11/09), Mr. Frank Hatley, of Georgia, spent a year in jail for owing back child support reimbursement although he is childless. The system knew that Hatley was not the father, yet incarcerated him anyway. Hatley was recently released from jail after his case came to the attention of a human rights group who intervened on his behalf. "Although shocking, these kinds of stories are not unusual. I hear from people almost daily about nightmarish child support injustices. Many of these parents are deadbroke. They need help - not punishment and jail. These are civil rights and human rights violations happening all across the country," said Lobo.

According to Lobo, cases like that of Hatley are symptoms of a large problem within the child support system which costs taxpayers huge sums of money and creates obstacles for children to have meaningful relationships with both of their parents.
