Concurrent Unlocks Second Screen for Broadband Customers
Concurrent Unlocks Second Screen for Broadband Customers
Concurrent's video to the PC solution provides broadband operators with new revenue opportunities
ATLANTA, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Concurrent (NASDAQ:CCUR) , a worldwide leader in video and media data and advertising solutions, today announced the availability of video to the PC, the latest innovation in the Company's Video Solutions portfolio. Video to the PC allows broadband operators to utilize their existing Concurrent infrastructure to deliver commercial grade video through high-speed internet connections to online viewers. From a subscriber's perspective, video to the PC makes it possible to access both live broadcast video and on-demand content through a PC with no additional hardware requirements. Broadband operators can now monetize their portfolio of video services by bundling their full offerings to both the TV and the PC.

Fundamental shifts are occurring in the video market as consumers demand more flexibility in their viewing options, similar to how digital file delivery dramatically altered how we purchase and listen to music. One of the greatest drivers is the proliferation of online video -- and not just user-generated content. Online viewership is growing significantly; with industry analyst firm SNL Kagan predicting that close to 60 percent of professionally created paid content will be viewed online within the 10-year outlook.
"Broadband operators are well-positioned to offer and monetize high quality video online because they already have the infrastructure necessary for commercial grade content aggregation and delivery," said David King, Concurrent chief marketing and strategy officer. "By partnering with Concurrent, operators can use the platform that has successfully enabled on-demand television to enable video to the PC. This will open-up a powerful second screen for video through which the operators can create new commercial models that drive both subscription and advertising revenue."
A key piece of Concurrent's solution is the ability to deliver live broadcast video, in addition to VOD content, to the PC without the need for subscribers to purchase additional hardware. With video to the PC, viewers have a way to not just catch-up on programming they may have missed on television, but an alternative medium on which to watch it live as it is broadcast. In a recent online video survey, The Diffusion Group reports that of the 43 percent of adult broadband users who stated they were interested in a TV-to-PC service, 66 percent stated they are willing to pay ten dollars or more each month for the service opening a new multi-billion dollar market for broadband operators.
"The industry is moving to monetizing media content in this manner," remarked King. "With video to the PC, broadband providers will be able to expand their commercial models around broadcast video just as satellite radio expanded its access to broadcast radio content through subscription models that include online and mobile device listening options."
Video to the PC is an extension of Concurrent's industry-leading MediaHawk platform, which provides unparalleled reliability and independent scaling of ingest, storage and distribution. Concurrent's Video Solutions are use Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) hardware and run on military-grade Linux , so they have the flexibility to work with different back offices and network configurations. This open modularity means operators can easily deploy video to the PC by turning on software functionality within their existing infrastructure. New systems in Greenfield applications can purchase the MH4500 and provision TV and PC operation together or independently.
Concurrent has over a decade of recognized leadership in delivering innovative, Emmy Award winning video solutions like video on demand and time shifting applications to broadband markets around the world.
Concurrent will be demonstrating its video solutions, including delivery to the television, PC and mobile device, as well as its Media Data and Advertising Solutions (MDAS) at IBC in Amsterdam, September 11-15, 2009, in Hall 5, Stand B16.
