WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 is 'On Your Side' with Healthy Living for Kids; Free Immunizations for Children on Sunday August 23rd at Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- WXYZ-TV Channel 7 and the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion will give thousands of Metro Detroit children a "boost" at the 32nd annual Healthy Living for Kids Immunization Fair. This year, the program will be held on Sunday, August 23rd, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Since its inception in 1977, Healthy Living for Kids has provided immunizations to more than 50,000 young people.

Eligible children three months and older will receive free immunizations against polio, rubella, measles, tetanus, mumps, varicella (chicken pox), diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), Hepatitis B, and HIB (haemophilus influenza type B). In addition, an HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine, designed to prevent cervical cancer, will be administered. Registered nurses from the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion will administer the shots with the assistance of over 150 volunteers from the Health Department and WXYZ-TV Channel 7.

Additional health services will be provided including free lead poisoning testing, sign-ups for WIC's (Women, Infant, and Children) feeding program, and enrollment for a wide variety of youth mentoring programs, including the Girl Scouts of America.

This year, Healthy Living for Kids will also provide access to community outreach organizations. The Trenton and Riverview Fire Department Smoke Houses will have firefighters on hand who will conduct fire safety lessons. Parents will also get free Child-ID kits from AAA of Michigan as well as receive important information from the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Children's Poison Control Center.

WXYZ-TV Channel 7 Action News on-air personalities will be on-hand to sign autographs and greet the children and their families. Helium balloons and goody bags will be provided to all Healthy Living participants courtesy of WXYZ-TV Channel 7. In addition there will be a host of other giveaways including toothbrushes, toothpaste, pens, pencils, stickers, books, Disney goodies, McDonald's toys, etc. . . Detroit Tigers mascot "Paws" will stop by and greet guests from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. while WJLB-FM 98 will make an appearance and distribute additional giveaways. Pizza will be provided courtesy of CiCi's Pizza! COSTCO Wholesale Corporation and Better Made Snack Food Company respectively will offer water and chips. Complimentary ice cream will be made available by Pars Ice Cream Company.
