Verizon Wins Approval From New York University to Install FiOS Services in Faculty Housing
First FiOS Installation in College Environment in New York City
NEW YORK, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon will install its FiOS network in New York University's faculty housing in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, under an agreement reached by the company and the university.
The agreement marks the first installation of Verizon's FiOS network and associated Internet and TV services at a university or college in New York City.
Installation work at NYU's Silver Towers and Washington Square Village began August 3. Faculty members living in the 2,300 units will be able to order the new services about the time the fall semester starts next month.
Verizon's FiOS Internet and TV are powered by the company's all-fiber-optic network, which the company is building in all five boroughs of the city.
"This is a significant installation for Verizon FiOS services," said Christopher Levendos, Verizon executive director of FiOS engineering in New York City. "As we continue to expand our FiOS network to all parts of the city, the NYU faculty housing agreement gives local, regional and global educators an opportunity to see first-hand the power of an all-fiber-optic network."
Levendos noted that Verizon will utilize newly developed optical network terminals (ONTs) that are designed for use in apartment complexes. The new devices, about the size of a basic home router, take up a minimum amount of space in an apartment, can be placed under desks or on shelves, and simplify the installation of Verizon FiOS Internet and FiOS TV services.
"FIOS provides high-speed Internet and advanced home-information and entertainment services that are essential for the 21st century," said Mitchell L. Moss, Henry Hart Rice Professor of Urban Policy and Planning at New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. "The new social networking functions of FIOS and the capacity of an all-fiber network will enhance the attractiveness of New York City as the world capital for ideas and information."
