13 girls compete in live talent competition to vie for a free week at a Girl Scouts Camp

WHAT: Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) will host its Camp Jam Finals event, a talent competition that is the culmination of a series of semi-finals held this spring at the Council's Summer Camp Open House events throughout its service region in the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys. The winner will receive a free week at the GSEP camp of her choice.

Radio Disney AM 640 will provide music and a fabulous prize wheel. Girls ages 14 and under can register to win four (4) tickets to Disney's Broadway musical, The Little Mermaid, and dinner at a New York City restaurant.

   Finalists arrive Saturday morning for a full weekend itinerary:   --  Preliminary on-stage and dress rehearsals   --  Performance tips from a professional musician and a make-up artist   --  A chance to meet Radio Disney AM 640's Stylin' Steph    --  Free time for socializing and group activities, before an overnight       stay   

Camp Jam will provide an exciting backdrop to GSEP's Summer Camp Open House, where visitors can tour the facilities, meet Camp counselors and former campers, and learn about available programs -- all of which include American Red Cross-certified swim lessons, pool recreation time, arts and crafts, nature programs and special events:

   --  Girl Scout Camps are open to all girls, ages 6 to 18   --  Girls do not need to be registered Girl Scouts to attend or       participate in camp programs (a $10 membership fee is required for       non-registered girls)   --  All programs include American Red Cross-certified swim lessons, pool       recreation time, arts and crafts, nature programs and special events   --  Campership grants are available to help defray program costs on a       first-come, first-served basis, pending financial eligibility   --  Extended care and transportation services are available    --  All Girl Scout camp activities accommodate youngsters with       disabilities    WHEN & WHERE: Sunday, June 7   1 to 4 pm (GSEP Summer Camp Open House)   1:30 to 3:30 pm (Camp Jam Finals competition)   Camp Laughing Waters   300 Hildebeidel Road, Gilbertsville (in New Hanover Township, PA)   

WHO: To qualify, 14 finalists -- including one 1st-grade youngster -- danced, sang and played musical instruments at one of four Camp Jam semi-final competitions. Finalists performing this weekend are:

   --  Julia Richter, Phoenixville, entering 5th grade at Schuylkill       Elementary School this fall   --  Lynde Kuntz, Lehighton, entering 5th grade at Towamensing Elementary       School   --  Katie Pullman, Churchville, entering 7th grade at Richboro Middle       School   --  Arianna Boccardi, Quakertown, entering 5th grade at St. Michael the       Archangel   --  Olivia Schwartz , West Chester, entering 6th grade at Hillsdale       Elementary School   --  Emily Murasso, Bethlehem, entering 9th grade at Liberty High School   --  Alexandra Waugh, Sinking Spring, entering 8th grade at Wilson Central       Junior High   --  Mackenzie Hall, Bethlehem, entering 6th grade at St. Anne School   --  Marisa Verdi, Holland, entering 4th grade at Hillcrest Elementary       School   --  Katelyn Sapp, Chadds Ford, entering 6th grade at C.F. Patton Middle       School   --  Gina South, Glen Mills, entering 6th grade at C.F. Patton Middle       School   --  Caroline Daly, West Chester, entering 6th grade at C.F. Patton Middle       School   --  Amanda Colton, Lafayette Hill, entering 5th grade at Colonial       Elementary School    --  (Emily Strauss, Cochranville, entering 2nd grade at Octorara Primary       Learning Center this fall, is also a finalist but unable to attend       this weekend's competition.)    Judging the event are:   --  Tina Wells, CEO of Buzz Marketing Group, a youth marketing agency that       serves clients in fashion, beauty, entertainment, business and       lifestyle sectors   --  Rachel Smolinsky, a junior music major at West Chester University    --  Ann Meredith, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania and founder       and former-CEO of Lights of Liberty, Inc.    WHY SUMMER CAMP?  

Child development studies demonstrate that youngsters who spend time in the outdoors have improved cognitive function, self-esteem, discipline -- and laugh more than children who do not. Natural environments can also provide a healing effect for youngsters facing emotional challenges.
