The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania Announces the Winner of the 2009 President's Award
PITTSBURGH, April 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fred I. Young, retired senior vice president of Hearst-Argyle Television Inc., is the 2009 recipient of the President's Award of The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, the board of directors announced.
He will be honored at the 45th Annual Golden Quills Awards dinner on May 14 at the Pittsburgh Hilton & Towers, Gateway Center, Downtown. The awards honor the best in Western Pennsylvania journalism.
As senior vice president, Mr. Young oversaw news operations at television stations in 26 markets throughout 22 states, including the Hearst-Argyle Washington D.C. bureau. In March, the station group won a prestigious Peabody Award in recognition of election coverage initiatives championed by Mr. Young beginning in 2000.
Mr. Young served for 25 years at WTAE-TV as vice president and general manager, news director and other news management positions. He joined Hearst Broadcasting in 1962. He is a graduate of Duquesne University.
Under Mr. Young's leadership, Hearst-Argyle stations have received many of television's highest awards for excellence in journalism, including the Edward R. Murrow Award, the Peabody, the duPont-Columbia Journalism Award, the National Headliner Award, the Emmy and the National Association of Broadcasters Service to America Award.
Mr. Young was honored last month with the Paul White Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association. The award recognizes an individual's lifetime contribution to electronic journalism. Mr. Young was one of only two of the award's 53 recipients - including Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite - to have been a career local-TV news professional.
The Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association recently selected Mr. Young as winner of the 2009 Roy E. Morgan Award for outstanding contributions to broadcasting.
