Spanish Exercise DVD Helps Latinas Reduce Risk of Preterm Labor
AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2007, Bedrest Fitness was released offering pregnant women on prescribed bed rest an exercise program. The first of its kind, Bedrest Fitness is a series of modified exercises that women on bed rest or restricted activity can perform to help maintain muscle strength and tone. Now Bedrest Fitness is available in Spanish, Ejercicios Para El Embarazo en Reposo.
"Bedrest Fitness has been well received by both clinicians and pregnant women," says DVD developer Darline Turner-Lee, founder of Next Step Fitness, Inc. "Several clinicians asked for a Spanish version. We are happy to now fill this need."
In the February 2008 Journal of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, R. Jeanne Ruiz, Ph.D, RNC and colleagues found Latinas who are born outside of the United States, have lived in the United States less than 10 years, are not proficient in English and have not completed high school have lower rates of preterm labor than their more Americanized peers. How can this be, they asked? The obvious difference is diet and exercise.
As Latinas adopt the American lifestyle their diets become higher in fat and lower in fiber, departing from the grains, beans and fresh fruit and vegetables of a more traditional Latin diet. They exercise less and have higher rates of obesity which is a major risk factor for diabetes that can cause preterm labor. Latinas have higher rates of diabetes than white or African American women.
Ejercicios Para El Embarazo en Reposo provides a simple yet effective set of exercises in the language many Latinas more easily understand. When performed regularly, Ejercicios Para El Embarazo en Reposo helps maintain muscle strength, tone and healthy weight. Weight maintenance lowers the risk of developing gestational diabetes and subsequently lowers the risk of preterm labor.
Next Step Fitness, Inc. is an emerging resource for women's health and high risk pregnancy. Founder Darline Turner-Lee holds a BS from Tufts University and a Master of Health Science Degree from Duke University. She practiced as a physician assistant before starting her own company. Turner-Lee had high risk pregnancies and delivered healthy babies at 37 and 40 years old.
