Hospitals and health systems to cut back on capital spending in 2009
A new report from the Noblis Center for Health Innovation has found that hospitals and health systems across the United States are cutting back on capital spending and unprofitable healthcare services as a result of the economic crisis. The Noblis study assesses the impact of the crisis on the financial health of hospitals and health systems, including utilization, profitability, uncompensated care, philanthropy, and fundraising goals. Operating profitability is a concern for many; more than 56 percent of hospitals and health systems saw a decrease in operating margin over the last quarter.

AARP: 70 percent believe country has not lived up to Kennedy's inaugural request
Seven in 10 Americans do not believe the country has lived up to President John F. Kennedy's inaugural challenge to "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country," according to a survey released by AARP Create The Good. The poll comes as President Barack Obama called on Americans to renew their commitment to community service. AARP surveyed more than 1,000 adults. Respondents felt that requests for monetary donations (thirty-four percent) have increased more compared with requests for volunteer time (eleven percent).
