Belo Corp. (BLC) Television Station, WFAA-TV, Honored With Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Gold Baton

DALLAS, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Belo Corp. (NYSE:BLC) , one of the nation's largest pure-play, publicly-traded television companies, announced today that WFAA-TV, its ABC affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth, received the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Gold Baton Award at a ceremony held last evening at Columbia University. WFAA made history last night as the only local news station to ever receive the prestigious Gold Baton. It is the first Gold Baton handed out by Columbia University since 2003.

The Gold Baton was awarded to WFAA for three investigative pieces: A Passing Offense which reported on grade changing for high school athletes, The Buried and the Dead which focused on the danger posed by faulty gas pipeline couplings, and Money for Nothing which drew attention to fraudulent loans tied to the Export-Import Bank of the United States. The reports were all products of the outstanding work of the News 8 Investigates team including reporters Byron Harris and Brett Shipp, investigative producer Mark Smith, investigative photographer Kraig Kirchem and vice president/News Michael Valentine.

"This is important recognition and a high honor for investigative journalism," said Dunia A. Shive, Belo's president and Chief Executive Officer. "This acknowledgement speaks to the vital role broadcast journalism plays in its local community."

WFAA has previously been honored with eight Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Silver Batons. Since 2000, Belo television stations have received nine Silver Batons which is more than any other commercial station group.

The Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards honor overall excellence in broadcast journalism and have been administered by the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University since 1968. Established by Jessie Ball duPont in 1942 in memory of her late husband, Alfred I. duPont, the awards are the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prizes, which are also administered by the Graduate School of Journalism.
