Three-hour Special on Legendary Santa Monica Venue airs on KCRW Dec. 31, 9 am to Noon
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- 89.9 FM KCRW-Santa Monica and KCRW.com celebrate the history of McCabe's Guitar Shop in a three-hour music special produced by the station, McCabe's at 50. Originally broadcast on Thanksgiving, it will be repeated on air and online from 9 am to noon PST on Wednesday, December 31, 2008.
The little guitar repair shop founded 50 years ago morphed unpredictably into one of LA's most treasured and now venerated concert rooms.
Inspired by the McCabe's 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert at UCLA's Royce Hall in October 2008, the program is hosted by current concert director Lincoln Myerson, and features interviews with all five of McCabe's concert directors, as well as Robert Riskin, the current owner who's been there since the store's beginning; former owner Walter Camp; current employees, and many of the artists who've come to define McCabe's, including T Bone Burnett, Dave Alvin, Loudon Wainwright and Peter Case, among others.
The show features exclusive, rare live performances recorded at McCabe's during different eras of the venue's evolution from Bill Monroe to the Ditty Bops. Current soundman Wayne Griffith, who's mixed McCabe's concerts for 35 years, recorded most of these sessions and provided the live recordings. See below for a full list of featured artists and interviewees.
McCabe's never had a business plan, beginning as a guitar repair shop and evolving organically into a music school, a community center for local musicians (from roots and folk to rock and cowboy punk), and one of the best rooms to experience music in an intimate space. Hear the history, the philosophy, the influences, as well as musical gems from their archives. The special is archived at KCRW.com.
