2009 Program Highlights at the MuseumsQuartier Wien

VIENNA, Austria, December 16/PRNewswire/ -- The MuseumsQuartier Wien, one of the world's largest complexes for contemporary art and culture with more than 60 different facilities for the performing arts, architecture, music, fashion, theater, dance, literature, children's culture, and digital culture, will once again be offering a wide array of cultural programs and events in the coming year.

In quartier21, an internationally acclaimed, cutting-edge "creative cluster" that offers space and support to small and medium-sized cultural initiatives within the MuseumsQuartier, the emphasis is on digital culture and design as well as fashion. Major fashion events in 2009 include the "Modepalast" (April 23-26), "Vienna Fashion Week" (September 24-27), and the exhibition "Sharp Chic" (February 7 to April 19). Like every year, "Summer in the MQ" will feature a richly varied series of events, starting with a dance performance by Elio Gervasi on May 7. A number of other activities are on the program until the end of September, including the "O-Tone" literary festival (from July 2), the digital film festival "frame[o]ut" (from July 3), and a special children's program. Starting in mid-November, "Winter in the MQ" will bring early Christmas cheer.

The big museums and exhibition halls also have plenty to offer. MUMOK - Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig will be presenting exhibitions on Austrian painter "Maria Lassnig" (February 13 to May 17) and American artist "Cy Twombly" (June 5 to October 11). A show on photographer "Zoe Leonard" will open in October.

Photography figures prominently at KUNSTHALLE wien as well. The "Summer of Photography" will include "Thomas Ruff: Surfaces, Endless Deepness" (May 21 to September 20) and "The Portrait: Photography as a Stage - From Mapplethorpe to Nan Goldin" (July 3 to October 18).

In its big fall exhibition "The Uncanny in Art" (October 16, 2009, to January 18, 2010), the Leopold Museum will be presenting the works of Munch, Ensor, and Kubin. Other exhibits survey the works of "Ernst Barlach" (February 13 to May 15) and "Josef Maria Auchentaller" (June 11 to September 21).

The Architekturzentrum Wien will be focusing on architecture in the Balkans with two shows - "Balkanology: New Architecture and Urban Phenomena in Southeast Europe" (October 10 to January 18, 2010) and "Bogdan Bogdanovic" (March 5 to June 2).

TanzQuartier Wien will be presenting outstanding national and international productions throughout the year. A special highlight is the Austrian premiere of "pitie" (March 6&7) by Les Ballets C de la B/Alain Patel/Fabrizio Cassol.

In May, the "Wiener Festwochen" festival will return to "Halle E+G" (May 8 to June 14), and the unforgettable dance percussion show "Stomp" is scheduled for October.

There will also be lots of exciting programs and events for kids and teens in 2009. "Tell Me about Death" (March 12 to June 18) is an interactive exhibition on the before and the after at ZOOM Kindermuseum. DSCHUNGEL WIEN - Theaterhaus fur junges Publikum is presenting a "Liechtenstein festival" from January 27 to 30 and an exhibition on the works of Hubertus Zorell (March 23 to April 4).
