New Globe Trotting Season of Current TV's 'Vanguard' Premieres October 22

All-New Episodes of Emmy-Nominated Investigative Documentary Series to Premiere Weekly, Wednesday Nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Modern pirates. Japan's robot invasion. America's secret war -- just a few of the stories tackled in the all-new season of Current TV's "Vanguard," premiering Wednesday, October 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. A new "Vanguard" report will premiere each week on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Each episode of the weekly series immerses viewers in a new story, providing an intimate look at compelling events across the country and around the globe.

The season begins on Oct. 22 with "America's Secret War." "Vanguard" correspondent Mariana van Zeller travels to the Iraq-Iran border to investigate claims that the United States is supporting militant groups attacking Iran. From the rugged Qandil Mountains, van Zeller meets the female guerillas who have been launching deadly raids into Iran and accompanies a small group of rebels through what some believe is the frontline of a covert American offensive.

In their ongoing quest to create documentaries that are gripping and accurate, "Vanguard" journalists have traveled around the world to report on topics ranging from the violence of white supremacists in Moscow to oil rebels in Nigeria, and have even documented a Vanguard journalist's first-hand experience with voluntary waterboarding.

"The 'Vanguard' team does whatever it takes to be at the forefront of events during a tumultuous time in our world," says Laura Ling, vice president, "Vanguard." "You can't tell a complete story with arms length journalism -- our style is toe-to-toe."

Upcoming episodes of "Vanguard" include: Great American Detour -- October 29nd at 10 p.m. ET/PT -- "The Great American Detour" documents a 20-day, 4,000-mile bus trip across the country. "Vanguard" producer Lauren Cerre zigzags from Los Angeles to New York, stopping to talk to people about national issues affecting their lives. With the entire country as a backdrop, Cerre highlights the most important and frequently ignored issues in America today. Modern Day Pirates -- November 5th at 10 p.m. ET/PT -- Kaj Larsen goes on a search for modern day pirates in the straits of Malacca, one of the most trafficked seaborne trading routes in the world. Kaj talks to pirate trackers, sailors who have been attacked and visits infamous dens to find the pirates themselves. I Heart Global Warming -- November 12th at 10 p.m. ET/PT -- The frozen nation of Greenland is thawing. While Greenland's melting ice sheet implies unfavorable environmental effects, Adam Yamaguchi finds Greenlanders have surprisingly positive reactions to this climatic upheaval. The big melt is ushering in a new modern age. Maxed Out -- November 19th at 10 p.m. ET/PT -- Young Americans raised in a relatively prosperous time are currently experiencing their first major economic jolt. From a college student without savings and a recent graduate trying to move away from home, to young people who are trying to stay afloat living on their own, this episode takes a look at the very personal side of economics. Chinatown, Africa -- November 26th at 10 p.m. ET/PT -- China's emergence as a global power may be most visible in Africa. In search of resources to fuel its booming economy, China has become a major, but controversial power on the continent. In "Chinatown, Africa," "Vanguard" correspondent Mariana van Zeller travels to Angola, China's number one oil supplier and largest African trading partner. Getting Out of Prison -- December 3rd at 10 p.m. ET/PT -- In the U.S., hundreds of thousands of inmates are released from prison every year. The trick is staying out -- up to 70 percent of California convicts are back behind bars within two years. Laura Ling follows several newly released inmates as they attempt to defy the odds. Japan: Robot Nation -- December 10th at 10 p.m. ET/PT -- Japan is approaching the problem of a shrinking population with a unique solution: a robot nation. "Vanguard" correspondent Adam Yamaguchi travels to Japan to show the growing power of the country's automated touch.
