Una Vez Mas Supports Must Carry for Class A Television Stations

DALLAS, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Una Vez Mas expressed its support for the Notice of Proposed Rule Making ("NPRM") introduced by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin that would permit the migration of Class A television stations to full- power status and allow certain additional qualified low-power television stations ("LPTV") to move to Class A status. Full-power status would entitle the stations to must-carry on their local cable systems. The NPRM is on the Commission's agenda for its open meeting scheduled for October 15.

"The time has come to fully recognize the contribution that Class A and LPTV stations make to their communities. These stations continue to provide important and sometimes crucial local content. During a period of media consolidation, they also continue to provide independent voices. The many benefits provided by Class A and LPTV stations are at risk of being lost," stated Randy E. Nonberg, President of Una Vez Mas, LP. "It is particularly appropriate, during the transition to a digital environment, for the Commissioners at the FCC to create an opportunity for public discussion of the issues that impact the viability of these stations," said Mr. Nonberg.

Una Vez Mas operates Class A and LPTV stations in 24 markets. Una Vez Mas provides Spanish-language news, sports, information and entertainment programming to the communities it serves. All of the stations are affiliates of the Azteca America Network.

LPTV and Class A stations were created by Congress to help democratize the airwaves. Although Class A stations are the only class of television service that is required to provide local programming, they have no mandated access to cable and other distribution platforms. They are critical community resources that promote diversity, localism and create opportunities for small businesses.
