New Children's Book Based on Discovery Kids' 'Mystery Hunters' TV Series
CHAPPAQUA, N.Y., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- In "Mystery Hunters," the Discovery Kids documentary series on the paranormal seen in about 100 countries around the world, two teenagers search for unexplained phenomena. Based on this award-winning series, Gotcha! 18 Amazing Ways to Freak Out Your Friends (Kids Can Press), is filled with tricks and hoaxes kids will love. Gotcha!, for ages 8-12, debunks such myths as the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, crop circles, and mind reading, and shows kids how to fake these effects to fool their friends. The engaging activities in Gotcha! help kids develop critical thinking skills and adopt a scientific approach to understanding new ideas and puzzling events. Author David Acer, who writes for "Mystery Hunters" and plays the TV character Doubting Dave, captures the fun and adventure of the series with his trademark humor and skepticism.
In Gotcha!, Doubting Dave teaches kids to create astounding illusions to convince their friends that they've accomplished feats that include videotaping a sea monster, becoming a psychic healer, and moving objects with their minds. Step-by-step, cartoon illustrations by Stephen MacEachern explain exactly what to do. Photos of the teenage stars of "Mystery Hunters," Araya and Christina, also appear, showing them undertaking real-world mystery hunts that correspond to the activities outlined in the book.
Doubting Dave's underlying message is that things are not always what they seem, and that it's important to keep an open mind. In Gotcha!, he shows that using the scientific method can be fun-and that persuading your friends that you've turned your brother into a zombie can be even more fun.
The "Mystery Hunters" series is the winner of a Parents' Choice Award and an Alliance for Children & Television Award of Excellence. David Acer has received two Gemini Awards (Canadian Emmy) for his writing on the show. Acer is also a stand-up comedian and magician. Gotcha! is his first book.
