Netflix Appoints Bill Holmes as V.P. of Business Development

Formerly with DivX, Holmes Will Lead the Effort to Make Many Consumer Electronics Devices Able to Instantly Stream Movies from Netflix

LOS GATOS, Calif., Sept. 2, 2008 - Netflix, Inc., the world's leading online movie rental service, today announced the appointment of Bill Holmes as vice president of business development, responsible for working with the company's growing list of consumer electronics partners to embed Netflix software into devices that instantly stream content from Netflix. He will report to the company's chief executive officer, Reed Hastings.

Prior to joining Netflix, Mr. Holmes was at DivX, Inc., a digital media company that creates, distributes and licenses digital video technologies. For the last two years, he served as vice president of business development and strategic marketing, during which time he was responsible for negotiating licensing deals with silicon providers such as Qualcomm, SanDisk, Broadcom and Matsushita among others.

Mr. Holmes joined San Diego-based DivX in 2003 as vice president of consumer electronics and launched the globally recognized DivX Certified program. More than 100 million DivX Certified DVD players, digital TVs, mobile phones and other devices have been brought to market by more than 250 leading consumer electronics manufacturers, including Sony, Samsung, LG, Philips, Panasonic, Pioneer and Toshiba among others.

At Netflix, Mr. Holmes will build upon the momentum the company has created in partnering with leaders in the CE industry. In May, Netflix and Roku introduced the Netflix Player by Roku, the first device to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the TV. This month, LG Electronics will start shipping the world's first Blu-ray disc player that will instantly stream content from Netflix to the TV and later this fall Microsoft's Xbox 360 will make instant streaming from Netflix available to its Xbox LIVE Gold members. Streaming to the PC and TV is offered at no additional charge to Netflix members.

"Bill Holmes will lead the ever-increasing effort by Netflix to develop more partnerships with great consumer electronics companies as we enter the era of Web-on-TV," said Mr. Hastings.

"I joined Netflix to help the company extend its reach to consumer electronics partners," said Mr. Holmes. "The combination of its strong brand, growing subscriber base and attractive content library provides clear value and strong differentiation to CE companies that embed Netflix software into their devices to instantly stream movies."

Prior to DivX, Mr. Holmes served as executive director of product development for Digital Entertainment Solutions in Hollywood, where he directed the company's digital media infrastructure providing encoding, content management and networked media distribution for major Hollywood studio clients. He earlier worked at Yotta Yotta, then based in Seattle, Wash., where as director of product management and product marketing he was responsible for the development and marketing of carrier-class networked storage arrays. Mr. Holmes holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Trinity University.
