Two Belo Stations Receive 2008 NABEF Service to America Awards

Two Belo Stations Receive 2008 NABEF Service to America Awards

DALLAS, June 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Belo Corp. (NYSE:BLC) announced today that KTVK and KTVB were presented last evening with National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) 2008 Service to America Awards. Service to America Awards are the highest public service honor given in the broadcast television industry and are awarded to television stations that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to public service in their local communities.

KTVK, Belo's independent station in Phoenix, was selected to receive the Television "Partnership" Award for its "Are You My Family?" campaign which showcases children for adoption through news stories and on the Web. Since the campaign premiered in June 2006, 65 children have been featured and 38 of them have been matched with adoptive families. This is well over twice the rate at which these children are normally adopted. In 2007, KTVK produced a special half-hour program to explain the adoption process. Because of the success of this partnership, the state agency responsible for these children is considering expanding the strategy throughout the state of Arizona. The partners for this ongoing campaign are Fore Adoption Foundation and Aid to Adoption of Special Kids.

KTVB, Belo's NBC affiliate in Boise, was given the "Friend In Need" Award by the judges for its "March Against Meth" campaign which fostered awareness about methamphetamine addiction and the services that are available in the community for families. The station dedicated 100 percent of its public service resources statewide for the entire month of March to educate adults and children on the dangers of Meth. Moreover, the campaign resulted in the Idaho Governor's involvement in launching the Idaho Meth Project and created new support for building the area's first detox center.

These honors mark the seventh and eighth Service to America Awards earned by Belo television stations since 1998 when NABEF introduced the program. The Celebration of Service to America Awards are sponsored and produced by NABEF with major support from Bonneville International Corp. and the National Association of Broadcasters.
