Local Volunteers Join Over 50,000 Nationwide On Annual Comcast Cares Day
BERLIN, Conn., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 1,000 local Comcast employees and their family members and friends turned out in force today to volunteer at seven Connecticut nonprofit organizations throughout the state in Danbury, Hartford, New Haven, Norwich, and Waterbury as part of Comcast Cares Day, the company's annual day of community service and one of the nation's largest single-day corporate volunteer efforts.
Projects included sprucing up Pope Park and the Connecticut Puerto Rican Forum in Hartford, partnering with the United Way of New Haven to install the City of New Haven's first "Born Learning Trail" at Conte West / Hills School in New Haven, performing trash pick up at East Rock Park in the Elm City, and landscaping and painting at Escape to the Arts in Danbury, the ARC of New London County in Norwich and the Police Activity League (PAL) of Waterbury.
"Comcast Cares Day is the cornerstone celebration of a 365-day a year commitment to the communities where our customers and our employees live and work," said Doug Guthrie, Regional Vice President of Comcast in Connecticut. "There is nothing more rewarding than giving back, and I'm grateful to the Comcast volunteers who have donated their time to help their neighbors throughout Connecticut."
This year's Comcast Cares Day attracted more than 4,700 Comcast employees and their families to 50 different sites across New England, including the seven Connecticut locations. New England volunteers joined more than 50,000 Comcast employees at nearly 500 community sites in 37 states and the District of Columbia, donating 300,000 volunteer hours of service and helping Comcast reach the milestone of one million total hours of service donated in seven Comcast Cares Days.
Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez stated, "Comcast is once again demonstrating what a great corporate citizen it is to the City of Hartford. By reaching out to the community, especially in regards to the education of our children and their families, they are members of the community and from that -- a wonderful commitment and partnership grows!"
"The citizens of Norwich are fortunate to have Comcast providing an integral service to our residents," said Norwich Mayor Benjamin Lathrop. "Comcast does care, which is evident by the work they are doing in our community and for our community. Thank you Comcast."
"United Way is proud to be connected to such an exciting project that will benefit families and children in our community," said Jennifer Heath, Vice President of Community Impact for United Way of Greater New Haven. "Comcast is creating a fun and effective way for parents to teach their children the kinds of skills they need to be prepared for school success through the installation of the state's second 'Born Learning Trail.' Comcast is really serving as a local business leader through this project and we hope more companies will follow in their footsteps to address the needs of young children and their families in New Haven."
Yanil Teron, Executive Director of the CT Puerto Rican Forum remarked, "We are grateful to have partnered with Comcast on their seventh annual Comcast Cares Day. The help we received from the Comcast employees, their families and friends today will bring a much needed refreshing change to our facility, allowing us to provide services to our community in a more comfortable environment. Our agency wouldn't be able to accomplish this alone because of the limited time and resources. Thank you Comcast!"
The Comcast Foundation will donate more than $1.5 million in grants to local community partner organizations across the country on behalf of the employees and family members who volunteered on Comcast Cares Day. The grants will help Comcast's community partners continue their mission of serving the community throughout the year.
