Amnesty International Brings 'The Children of Darfur' Photo Tour to New Orleans, April 10-20

Photographer Ron Haviv to Speak About Sudan Photos on April 19th

NEW YORK, April 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Award-winning photographer Ron Haviv and Mahmoud Braima, a Darfuri displaced by the violence in his homeland, will speak at noon, Saturday, April 19 as part of an Amnesty International-sponsored photo exhibit of children from the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan. The event, co-sponsored by the organization "Voices from Darfur" and the New Orleans 5th Annual Human Rights Festival, will take place at the Zeitgeist Multi-disciplinary Arts Center in New Orleans, LA, and is free and open to the public. The photos will remain on display through Sunday, April 20 (details below).

Part of a nationwide tour, the exhibit features 36 photographs and a film, which shows Darfuri children as they face the terrible violence and atrocities of the ongoing conflict, now entering its sixth year. More than 2.5 million people have been displaced by violence in the region and hundreds of thousands have died. Of the estimated four million people affected by the conflict in Darfur, 1.8 million are children under the age of 18. One million children have been uprooted and are living in displacement and refugee camps.

"The exhibit places a human face on one of the world's most pressing and tragic humanitarian crises," said Everette Catilla, a field organizer with Amnesty International USA, which is sponsoring the exhibition. "These photographs bring the conflict out of Sudan and into our consciousness. We hope the program inspires viewers to press their elected officials to work harder to end the conflict in Darfur."

"We are once again watching systematic murder, rape and displacement unfold live before our eyes," said Ron Haviv, the photographer. "What more do we need to know before we truly act as world citizens to stop it?"

Ron Haviv has covered conflict and humanitarian crises in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Russia and the Balkans. His photographs have appeared in Vanity Fair, Time and Newsweek, and he has won awards from World Press Photo, Picture of the Year and the Overseas Press Club.

Since 2003, Amnesty International has exposed the brutal violence and human rights violations in Darfur and campaigned to end the atrocities. The human rights organization has called for the United States and the international community to press Sudan to implement the speedy deployment of the full 26,000-member United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force and to provide funding for critical land and air transport equipment, including helicopters. Visitors to the exhibition will be provided information on how they can become engaged in the campaign.
