Refreshingly Upbeat New South African Film Hits UK

LONDON, March 18/PRNewswire/ -- Award-winning, MTV Films produced South African comedy smash Bunny Chow hits the UK from the 21st March at the ICA in London. Film distributor Dogwoof bring this authentic grassroots South African comedy to selected UK screens and has worked closely with the stars to bring an exclusive online gig to fans that can be accessed by registering at http://www.dogwoof.com/bunnychow.

Since Tsotsi broke onto the international scene in 2005 and announced a new age in South African filmmaking, an increasing number of the nation's films have found their way to the UK film market. What sets Bunny Chow apart is that it's the first time a South African comedy has made it to our shores.

Distributed by leading UK label Dogwoof, Bunny Chow - an Official Selection at the Toronto International Film Festival - has garnered massive support from the UK-based South African media, and ex-pat community at large. The SA Times praises the film: "It represents the melting pot of cultures, religions and sexual preferences of Johannesburg" while star Yusuf 'Joey' Rasdien enthuses, "This film is not about apartheid, it's not about Aids, it's not about crime, it's not about drugs or all the other negative things that South Africa seems to be infamous for. It's a heart-warming story about friends trying to get the best out of their respective situations and the processes it entails."

After the import of issue-led and political films, Bunny Chow brings freshness and authentic humour, allowing audiences to see 'sex, drugs, & rock n roll' transplanted to a youthful, urban Johannesburg.

Starring the cream of South Africa's stand-up comedy talent including Rasdien, Kagiso Lediga, David Kibuuka, and directed by award-winning filmmaker John Barker, Bunny Chow represents a welcome addition to the nation's film exports.

Director Barker references the success of Tsotsi "[Tsotsi director] Gavin Hood really put us [South Africans] on the filmmaking map and we certainly benefited from their success," but Bunny Chow offers a very different approach to contemporary South Africa, and UK audiences have the chance to check it out from 21st March.
