BACKGROUND: On March 26th leaders will join together for a press conference to announce the launching of the first nationwide actions for a national holiday for the late Cesar E. Chavez, founder and former President of the United Farm Workers. Carlos Santana, Edward James Olmos, Martin Sheen and over two hundred and fifty organizations, sixty members of Congress, many elected officials and celebrities support a national holiday for Chavez. In 2002 Los Angeles passed a resolution supporting a national holiday.

"We aim to win a national holiday for Cesar Chavez on his birthday March 31 so that all Americans and the generations to come may be inspired by Cesar Chavez's extraordinary legacy," said Evelina Alarcon, Executive Director of Cesar E. Chavez National Holiday, the organization that is spearheading the holiday effort.
