Wal-Mart Donates 3 Million Meals to America's Second Harvest in Response to a Nationwide Food Shortage
Responding to a nationwide food and grocery shortage in food banks this holiday season, Wal-Mart has announced that it is donating three million meals, the equivalent of one million dollars, to America's Second Harvest. This is the nation's largest charitable hunger-relief organization. The majority of the donation comes in the form of fifty food-filled trucks being dispatched to food banks servicing every state in the nation. Wal-Mart's contribution will provide much-needed meals to communities throughout the country just in time for the holidays.

National Executions on Hold as New Jersey Takes Historic Step to End Capital Punishment
Executions dropped to a thirteen-year low of forty-two in 2007, as a de facto moratorium took hold in the wake of the U-S Supreme Court's examination of lethal injection procedures. This is according to the Death Penalty Information Center's 2007 Year End Report. The number of inmates received under death sentences was one-hundred-fifteen in 2006 and the projection for 2007 is one hundred ten, the lowest number since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Death sentences have dropped sixty percent since 1999. New Jersey became the first state to abolish the death penalty through legislation in over forty years and New York has abandoned capital punishment after its statute was found unconstitutional.
