FBI Harnesses Power of on Demand From Comcast to Track Criminals, Find Missing Persons, Make Communities Safer
"Police Blotter ON DEMAND" Results in Valuable Consumer Tips in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Catching criminals on demand isn't that simple, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is finding that ON DEMAND technology from Comcast can provide valuable assistance. According to the FBI, "Police Blotter ON DEMAND," a community-oriented local video on demand offering launched last December in the Philadelphia area is already providing valuable tips that are assisting law enforcement agencies in tracking and bringing criminals to justice. Just recently a Comcast customer contacted the FBI with a tip involving a bank robber dubbed "the Bluffer" after seeing his profile ON DEMAND.
"This Comcast offering gives us a new and effective way to take advantage of technology to reach the public," said FBI Special Agent in Charge Jody Weis. "Police Blotter allows the public to study the surveillance photos and learn important details about the criminals and crimes. We believe the ability to pause and rewind for closer review could help viewers make important connections and associations they might otherwise miss."
Police Blotter ON DEMAND features regularly updated video profiles of bank robbers, missing persons and individuals from the Philadelphia Police Department's "Most Wanted" list, giving Philadelphia-area residents an opportunity to help authorities by providing any known information or tips on the persons in question. The offering is available free of charge to Comcast Digital Cable customers throughout the Philadelphia region; in the City of Philadelphia alone, this represents more than 80% of Comcast's subscribers.
Comcast Digital Cable customers in the greater Philadelphia region can view Police Blotter video profiles -- featuring Philadelphia Police Department detectives who outline the cases -- any time of the day or night at no additional cost. The profiles, updated frequently, include information on how viewers with knowledge about the profiled individuals can contact the police anonymously. To view Police Blotter On Demand, Comcast Digital Cable customers can tune to Channel 1 on their Digital Cable lineup or press the ON DEMAND button on their remote control, then click on the "Get Local" section.
"Police Blotter On Demand is another way Comcast is using technology to make a positive difference," said Michael Doyle, president, Comcast Cable Eastern Division and founder, CN8, The Comcast Network. "Comcast is uniquely qualified to offer this type of local video on demand programming, and we are using our advanced fiber network and our reach to assist the communities in which we live and work."
