As Veterans Day Approaches, New Lifetime Every Woman Counts Poll Shows Hillary Clinton and John McCain Deemed Best Presidential Candidates to Address Needs of Military Families
NEW YORK, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lifetime Networks today announced the results of a nationally representative poll showing Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate John McCain are the clear frontrunners in their respective parties when it comes to which presidential candidate would better address the needs of military families as Commander in Chief. However, nearly one-quarter of women (23%) weren't sure who in either party to entrust with this important job.
The poll was released as part of Lifetime's nonpartisan, award-winning Every Woman Counts campaign. First launched in 1992 and now entering its fifth presidential election cycle, the initiative was created to ensure that issues important to women are part of the dialogue during election season, while encouraging women to run for public office, register and vote.
How Women Rank the Democratic Field -- Women polled believe Senator Clinton (31%) would best address the needs of military families, followed by John Edwards (13%), Barack Obama (11%), Bill Richardson (4%), Joe Biden (4%) Dennis Kucinich (2%) and Chris Dodd (1%). -- Nearly half of the Democratic women polled (49%) believe Hillary Clinton would best tackle military families' concerns. Barack Obama ranked second among Democratic women at 10%, John Edwards at 9% and Joe Biden at 4%. However, more Republican women believe both Obama (15%) and Edwards (14%) would better address these families' needs than Clinton (8%). How Women Rank the Republican Field -- John McCain (32%) is best suited to take care of military families according to women polled, followed by Rudy Giuliani (15%), Fred Thompson (5%), Mitt Romney (4%), Mike Huckabee (3%), Ron Paul (3%), Duncan Hunter (2%) and Tom Tancredo (1%). -- The poll indicates that Republican and Democratic women are in agreement about where the Republican candidates rank. John McCain leads the pack (38% R, 28% D), followed by Rudy Giuliani (22% R, 17% D), Fred Thompson (7% R, 5%D) and Mitt Romney (7% R, 3% D). How Minority Women Voters Rank the Field -- African-American and Hispanic women are roughly three times more likely to pick Hillary Clinton as military families' best ally than any other Democratic candidate (51% and 41%, respectively). -- John McCain is the top Republican candidate for this job among Caucasian (37%) and African-American (24%) women, but among Hispanic women, Rudy Giuliani garnered the most support (25% for Giuliani vs. 16% for McCain). Age Matters -- Hillary Clinton led the Democrats among women of all age groups, but the younger the woman, the more likely she was to acknowledge Clinton with this distinction. -- John McCain was the #1 Republican candidate, and also led among women of all age groups, but the poll shows that most of his support was driven by older women. Rudy Giuliani, who came in second, garnered most of his support from younger women ages 25-44. -- Ron Paul garnered a surprising amount of support from women ages 18-24 (15%), but virtually no support from women polled age 25+ (less than 2%). Women and Families -- Moms with children under the age of 18 polled are more likely than women without children to say frontrunner Hillary Clinton is the Democrat best suited for this role (33% and 29%, respectively). Moms are also more likely to choose John Edwards, who ranked second overall in the Democratic field, than women without children (17% and 11%, respectively). -- Women without children are more likely to support John McCain (the Republican who ranks #1 among all women) than those with kids under the age of 18 (36% and 27%, respectively). However, these moms are twice as likely to support Rudy Giuliani, who ranked second overall, than women without children under 18 (22% and 10%, respectively). Methodology:
The Lifetime poll was conducted by Opinion Research Corporation via telephone among a nationally representative sample of 1,003 women ages 18+ in the United States. The survey was completed during the period October 25-28, 2007. Full results available upon request.
