True High Definition Arrives in India for the First Time With the Launch of HD VMD

MUMBAI, India, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- New Medium Enterprises (NME) (BULLETIN BOARD: NMEN) will unveil the world's first Multi Layer Disc and Player format and High Definition Bollywood film titles in India at the Times AV Revolution Expo at Bombay Exhibition Center.

NME is introducing HD for the first time in India, with their HD VMD (High Definition Versatile Multilayer Disc) Multilayer Player, along with content in Hindi, Tamil, English and gradually in all regional languages. This week will also see the launch of an HD VMD Bundle Box including 5 HD titles, available at a RRP of RS11500, through Indian retailers and on e-commerce sites for Asian audiences living overseas.

As part of NME's launch into six regions worldwide, India remains a central and important focus within its global strategy. With top tier Bollywood film distributor Eros already signed up as an international partner, NME are forging a number of other key content and electronic relationships, quickly establishing HD VMD as the most supported High Definition format in India. They also count film content distributors AP International, Ultra and Eagle as partners for South Indian and Hollywood content and are nearing conclusion with four other major distributors to be announced later this month.

Despite the proliferation of HD LCD and plasma displays, many consumers, including those in Asia, have little or no access to High Definition content. Forecasts have predicted it would be some time before HD becomes a true global offering. By introducing HD VMD, NME promises to revolutionize the home entertainment market in Asia with the first HD red laser format available to consumers. This first generation HD VMD Player offers "True High Definition" in 1080p; in addition, it is backwards-compatible and capable of playing existing DVD formats. NME will be offering players and titles at a price considerably lower than its larger competitors, making it the most accessible HD format yet. Recent demonstrations at worldwide events like Cannes Film Festival, CEDIA in the US, IFA in Germany and CeBIT have seen a number of major manufacturing brands excited about licensing the VMD technology.

HD VMD technology is based on a high-capacity red laser optical disc designed by NME, who have developed the world's first commercially produced multilayer disc, by mastering the process to increase the number of layers for information storage, with typical storage capacities of 5GB per layer. HD VMD's affordability, adherence to current manufacturing processes and speed to market have been embraced by rights holders, electronics distributors and replicators alike.
