LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The stellar nine-piece blues outfit L.A. Blues Alliance -- assembled in 2006 by lauded television composer Mike Post -- reaches #26 on iTunes' top Blues Albums chart with What A Life, their 2007 debut album. The scorching fifteen-track disc was released earlier this summer on BabyRee Recordings with distribution through Fontana/Universal.
The most famous and prolific TV composer in the history of the medium -- with credits including Law & Order, Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law and NYPD Blue -- Emmy/5X GRAMMY-winner Post began his career as a performer, and has nursed a lifelong passion for the blues. The idea for ringleading a group of ace players came to Post after combing through his massive record collection last year and listening to the 1960 blues LP Down South Summit Meeting. Released during the vaunted early '60s blues revival, the album featured greats including Brownie McGhee, Sonny Terry, Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Bill Broonzy and others jamming.
"It got me thinking," Post told Variety recently, "Why don't I call up my friends, some of which don't even know each other, and have them come to my studio for five or six days to see what might happen."
After Post's invitation to cut an album live in the studio drew enthusiastic response, L.A. Blues Alliance's world class team -- who alternate on vocal duties -- came together as: 3X GRAMMY winner Keb' Mo' (guitars, mandolin), Louisiana-based slide guitar master Sonny Landreth (guitars), ex-Canned Heat frontman Stanley Behrens (harmonica, tenor sax), Mike Finnigan (Hammond B3 organ, piano), ace of bass Bob Glaub (bass, percussion), Amy Keys (vocals), David Morgan (keyboards), GRAMMY winner John "JR" Robinson (drums, percussion) and Emmy winner W.G. Snuffy Walden (guitars).
Each person was asked to bring two song ideas to the sessions, originals and blues classics alike. The result is the rollicking, Post-produced debut album What A Life. In addition to the Finnigan-penned title track, stand-outs include Landreth on "Illinois Blues," Keb' Mo' on "T.V. Mama," "Money Honey" and "Shop Around" (the latter two duets with Amy Keys), Behrens on "Who's Talking," and Keys' pull-out-the-stops version of Stevie Wonder's "Maybe Your Baby" and the original "Like I Do," co-composed by Post and Morgan.
Blues Revue called What A Life, "raucous, upbeat and sounds like old friends making lively music and having a marvelous time." A sold-out crowd at House of Blues Sunset Strip last spring had the opportunity to experience the L.A. Blues Alliance phenomenon in concert (their only show to date). Post and company are hoping to step out onstage together again in the coming months.
