V-me Presents Honor Hispano: Voices, Images and Stories

October 12 begins Month-long Salute to Latinos in Military Service, Past & Present

NEW YORK, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- From the first bugle blast of the War of Independence in 1776 to the current campaign against terrorism, every war in U.S. history has involved the valiant service of Latinos- including 10,000 Mexicans who fought in the Civil War, 500,000 Latinos who stood up for freedom in World War II, and 400,000 who answered the call of duty in Korea and Vietnam. Today there are over 120,000 Latinos on active duty in all ranks of the military, and the number of Latino service men and women is growing faster than any other ethnic group.

Behind all of these numbers and facts are compelling narratives and images of bravery and sacrifice-some somber and some that are funny, others angry and proud-that give the personal perspectives of ordinary Latino men and women who served in war or lived through it on the home front.

In keeping with V-me's mission to reveal the depth and scope of the U.S. Hispanic experience, the network announces Honor Hispano, a month-long interactive event highlighting the contributions and sacrifices of America's Latino servicemen and women.

Beginning October 12 and culminating on Veteran's Day, November 12, V-me will feature a wide variety of presentations in many formats. Some highlights of this celebration include:

   -- Voces, Imagenes e Historias - Latinos who have served or the families      who have supported them are invited to share their memories, thoughts      and experiences by submitting written accounts, photos and videos to a      special Honor Hispano section of the V-me website www.VmeTV.com.  A      selection of materials will be featured there with opportunities to      comment and discuss. In addition, some of the materials will be      narrated and presented as vignettes on-air and online. Viewers may also      submit names of soldiers and brief text messages that will air as      crawls during event programming.    -- A Special Presentation from Viva Voz - (Sunday, November 11 and Monday,      November 12) V-me's signature primetime nightly interview program will      present a two-part special compiling selections from all the different      viewer submissions and also interviews with veterans, family members,      historians, elected leaders and more. During the broadcasts, messages      sent on V-me's website will be displayed as a text crawl.    -- War Stories (Historias de Guerra) - (Tuesday, October 30 and Monday,      November 12) V-me will present an original production based on the      story of Manuel and Gloria Medina, a Puerto Rican couple who endured      the traumatic events of World War II and its effects firsthand.    -- Diaries from Baghdad (Diarios desde Bagdad )- (Sunday, October 14 and      Saturday, November 10) V-me's Clio Presenta series will chronicle in      gritty detail the daily life of a Mexican journalist reporting on the      war, the insurgency and his encounters with soldiers and civilians he      meets in the conflict zone.    -- Cuando el servicio llama: Vivencias de familias militaires - (Saturday,      October 13, Tuesday, October 30 and Sunday, November 11) Hosted by      well-known telenova actress Gaby Rivero, this half-hour special,      adapted from Sesame Street Workshops' award winning When Parents Are      Deployed, reveals candid and intimate moments with parents, caregivers      and children who express how they cope with the daily challenges and      concerns associated with parents serving overseas, and how families      deal with their coming home.
