"Perry Mason," the criminal lawyer played by Raymond Burr, whose courtroom dramatics captivated viewers for years. This week also marks the 50th anniversary of the first airing of "Maverick" and "The Thin Man." Many other shows first aired this month in the past, including the 40th anniversary of "The Flying Nun" and "Ironside," which also starred Raymond Burr. And two shows premiered 35 years ago "The Waltons," and one of television's all time hits, "M*A*S*H." When Perry Mason first appeared in 1957, there were 519 commercial television stations in the U.S. Now, that number is 1,366.
