Philip Pullman's Butterfly Tattoo Being Filmed in Oxford
OXFORD, England, September 3/PRNewswire/ -- Philip Pullman, international best-selling author of 'The Golden Compass', has given Dutch production company Dynamic Entertainment DEH his full support to the independent feature, 'The Butterfly Tattoo': "I'm impressed with the enthusiasm and professionalism of the team at Dynamic Entertainment and happy to support their efforts to bring The Butterfly Tattoo to the screen". Currently in production in Oxfordshire, this groundbreaking feature - based on Pullman's novel of the same name - promises to show a side of Oxford not seen in the Harry Potter and Inspector Morse films.
The Butterfly Tattoo is Pullman's modern version of a classic Shakespearean love story. It is the tragic story of Chris, a teenager who meets the love of his life, Jenny, by chance at an Oxford college summer ball. While Jenny is street smart, Chris is naïve. And while Chris has had a regular life; Jenny is haunted by a past of abuse. Then bad fortune hits the young lovers; right after their first night together they are separated. The next time Chris holds Jenny, she is dead in a pool of her own blood.
Dynamic Entertainment, run by three Dutchmen; Rik Visser, Wesley Kloppenburg and Jolies van Emburg, aims to provide educational opportunities for trainees in the industry and 'The Butterfly Tattoo' is no exception to this maxim by involving numerous young film 'amateurs' in the film's production. The production company lost no time in attaching award-winning British director, Phil Hawkins. Phil was personally selected by Steven Spielberg to appear on DreamWorks reality television show 'On The Lot' having watched Hawkins' short film 'Commandeered'. Screenwriter Stephen Potts, having studied in Oxford, knows the city where 'The Butterfly Tattoo' is set by heart and Dynamic Entertainment is confident he has a great understanding of the story and the characters that drive it.
With a budget of just EUR200,000, The Butterfly Tattoo will be in a different league to New Line's adaptation of Pullman's bestselling and award-winning 'His Dark Materials' trilogy, starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Eva Green. Due for a summer 2008 release, the production team first intend to premiere the film to audiences at the Cannes film festival next year.
