U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for July 19

WASHINGTON, July 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:

THURSDAY, JULY 19: ELVIS RECORDS HIS FIRST SONG

Profile America -- Thursday, July 19th. On this day 53 years ago, a record was recorded by a singer destined to become an American cultural icon. The record was "That's All Right Mama," by 19-year-old Elvis Presley. The flip side was "Blue Moon of Kentucky." The single had been previewed by a Memphis disc jockey a few weeks before and had caused a sensation. Later that month, Elvis appeared in his first public concert at the Overton Park Orchestra Shell in Memphis billed third on a program headed by country singer Slim Whitman. When Elvis' first record was released, the average American spent $23 a year on records, radio and television. Now, each of us spends over $42 annually on recorded music alone. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at www.census.gov.
