Government Needs to Listen to Parents

Government Needs to Listen to Parents

Majority of Parents Agree Current Controls and Rating Systems Work

CHARLESTON, S.C., June 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing to discuss the impact of media violence on children.

"The United States Senate should weigh heavily the views of parents rather than selective interest groups like The Parents Television Council (PTC) who use sensationalism, selective data and self-serving conclusions as part of an ongoing effort to influence lawmakers. Parents have submitted their testimony and they are overwhelmingly opposed to government stepping in to do more," said Jim Dyke, executive director of TV Watch.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING: -- 60 percent of parents disagree with the statement: "The current parental controls and ratings systems have failed. It's time for government to step in and do more." -- 92 percent of parents agree with the statement: "Government involvement in curbing the amount of violence on television is okay in theory, but at the end of the day, the best way to prevent a child from seeing content deemed inappropriate is a parent in the home... not a politician in Washington."

TV Watch was launched in May 2005 and is the leading national organization to promote parental controls and individual choices as an alternative to increased government regulation of TV content. TV Watch is a nonpartisan coalition of 27 individuals and organizations including legal and entertainment experts and political and consumer organizations representing more than four million Americans.
