Top-Rated Korean TV Drama 'My Lovely Sam-Soon' to Debut in US

Going Mainstream: Major U.S. Retailers Now Carry Korean Drama DVDs

SAN BRUNO, Calif., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- YA Entertainment LLC, the exclusive distributor of popular Korean TV drama mini-series on DVD with English subtitles in North America, today announced the November 29, 2005 DVD release date of South Korea's highest-rated TV drama of 2005, "My Lovely Sam- Soon." The 16-episode series is a product of the Korean Wave -- the worldwide craze for South Korean popular culture.

Today, over 25 million American households have access to popular Korean TV dramas through cable and local TV channels.

Major US DVD retailers have caught on to the popularity of Korean TV dramas. Selected Tower Records and Borders stores throughout the US now carry YA Entertainment's wide selection of English-subtitled Korean TV dramas in DVD format. The DVD box sets are also available through Amazon.com, YesAsia.com, over 200 independent video stores and 120 independent bookstores.

"My Lovely Sam-Soon," known as "South Korea's Bridget Jones," is a cultural sensation in Korea. It achieved over 50 percent viewership ratings during its original July 2005 broadcast. The story centers on an unpolished and opinionated pastry chef named Sam-Soon who does not fit the mold of the typical Korean TV drama princess. Sam-Soon's stereotype-breaking attitude, closer to the Korean everywoman, has struck a cord with audiences worldwide.

In time for the year-end shopping season, YA Entertainment is also releasing other popular Korean TV drama titles on DVD in the fall of 2005, including "Something Happened in Bali," "Spring Days" and "Sandglass."

"Korean TV dramas continue to captivate English-speaking audiences in the US," said Tom Larsen, General Manager, YA Entertainment. "Americans are increasingly drawn to a refreshing mix of high production values, emotional storylines and unforgettable music soundtracks. The availability of our DVDs at Tower Records and Borders validates the rising significance of the Korean Wave."
