Journalists From Bangladesh, Germany and Iran Win Courage in Journalism Awards From the International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF)
WHAT: The IWMF's Courage in Journalism Awards to honor women journalists from Bangladesh, Germany and Iran who have faced death threats, braved war zones and reported on events and people with integrity and insight.
WHO: Recipients are: Sumi Khan, a reporter with Samakal in Bangladesh. Khan reports on politics, crime and corruption in one of the most dangerous countries for journalists in the world. Anja Niedringhaus, a German traveling staff photographer for the Associated Press. Niedringhaus has reported on conflicts in the Gaza Strip, Israel, Kuwait and Turkey. In 2005, she shared a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography with the AP staff for her work in Iraq. Shahla Sherkat, editorial director of Zanan (Women) in Tehran. Sherkat founded the monthly magazine in 1991, after she was dismissed from her position as editorial director at Zan-e Rouz, a government-owned weekly women's magazine, because she wanted to change the way it depicted women.
The IWMF will give its Lifetime Achievement Award to Molly Ivins, a nationally syndicated, award-winning political columnist in the United States.
Larry King, host of CNN's Larry King Live and Nancy Tellem, president, CBS Paramount Network Television Entertainment, are event co-chairs for the Los Angeles awards ceremony. Maria Shriver is the Honorary Chair. Presenters include Annette Bening, Campbell Brown of NBC, Phil Bronstein, editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, and Julie Chen of CBS.
