CHS Presents Oscar Micheaux's 'Within Our Gates' Film Screening at the University of Chicago in Conjunction With CHS' Without Sanctuary Exhibit

CHICAGO, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chicago Historical Society, University of Chicago and the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture present the film screening of Oscar Micheaux's Within Our Gates: Lynching and the Black Aesthetic in Early Cinema on Friday, October 21, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. The screening will be at the University of Chicago Film Studies Center at Cobb Hall, 5811 South Ellis Avenue, Room 307.

Perhaps the oldest surviving film by a black filmmaker, it was censored upon its original release in 1919 for its depictions of rape and lynching, and subsequently lost for many years. Rediscovered in Madrid only within the last fifteen years, the Library of Congress restored and re-released the film in 1993. The screening will be accompanied by pianist David Drazin and followed by a question-and-answer discussion period with University of Chicago professor Jacqueline Stewart and Pearl Bowser of African Diaspora Images. This film should be watched by mature audiences only, due to the graphic nature of the film. The film will be shown on 35mm film, courtesy of the Library of Congress, and lasts 75 minutes.

Seating is limited and reservations are strongly suggested. To RSVP for the screening, please contact the Chicago Historical Society at 312.642.4600.

The Chicago Historical Society, a major museum and research center for Chicago and American history, is located on Clark Street at North Avenue.
