Tom Joyner's BlackAmericaWeb.com Relief Fund Surpasses $1 Millon Mark for Hurricane Katrina Victims
AllState and African-American Community Leader, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Aid Relief Efforts for the Grassroots Campaign
DALLAS, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Show, announced today that the BlackAmericaWeb.com Relief Fund recently raised more than $1 million dollars in funds since its creation. The relief fund, dedicated to assisting families opening their homes to Hurricane Katrina refugees, is a grassroots effort that relies mainly on incremental donations from Tom Joyner Morning Show listeners and assistance from local churches and religious groups.
"We're very proud that not only Black America, but all of America, has banded together in our time of need to support this effort," says Tom Joyner, whose syndicated radio show reaches more than 8 million listeners weekly in over 115 markets. "We're glad to be able to reach out to all of these people helping people. Everybody has to do all we can to make a difference."
Created less than two weeks ago, the BlackAmericaWeb.com Relief Fund accepts donations to provide relief in the form of gift cards to support families who are housing those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The Fund continues to support individual families who have opened their homes to displaced families and loved ones to supplement their households as relief efforts continue. Relief assistance is given directly to the families who need assistance.
In efforts to raise additional much-needed funds for hurricane victims, AllState has pledged to match consumer donations dollar-for-dollar to BlackAmericaWeb.com's Relief Fund up to $250,000. Through the Tom Joyner Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Allstate is also helping to assist displaced students and has created the "Get a Quote, Help a Student" program.
African-American community leader Bishop T.D. Jakes has also pledged to match consumer donations up to $100,000 to aid fundraising for Hurricane Katrina victims and the families taking them in.
As part of another effort, U.S. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. (D.-Ill.) has agreed to donate 100% of the proceeds raised at during the Saturday night celebration he hosts in Washington, DC after the Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Weekend Dinner.
