Fraunhofer IPSI Digital Watermarks for Music Downloads
DARMSTADT, Germany, September 8/PRNewswire/ --
- 'labeltools' Among Finalists for IMEA Prize at Popkomm Music Trade Fair
- Radical Cost Savings for labelling
The company 'labeltools' in Bremen, Germany has integrated watermark technology developed by the Fraunhofer Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute (IPSI) into its "iPool" music labelling software and has already been selected as a finalist for this year's IMEA (Innovation in Music and Entertainment Awards) Award at the Popkomm music trade fair. labeltools will be in hall 15, booth 121 for the duration of the fair from 14 to 16 September. Watermarks prevent unauthorised use
Fraunhofer IPSI's watermarking technology (http://www.ipsi.de/watermark) prevents anonymous unauthorised use of music files, for instance through availability on download portals or file sharing networks. Whoever distributes music illegally must count on being caught and held to account, rather like a speeding car driver being identified by means of his car number plate. For pirate copies, however, more than a fine will mostly be the consequence - since on principle music labels are entitled to compensation calculated on the basis of the number of pirate copies downloaded. And that can be expensive.
Watermarks also usable for audiobooks and films
Among the companies already making use of Fraunhofer IPSI watermarks is the audiobook portal soforthoeren.de . Other companies from the audiobook and music industry are set to follow this year. The feasibility of using similar technology developed by Fraunhofer IPSI for tracking pirate film copies was publicly confirmed by the German Association of Film Distributors after a study in July of this year.
