Telkomsel Trials 3G With Nokia in Indonesia

Telkomsel Trials 3G With Nokia in Indonesia

ESPOO, Finland, June 14/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nokia has deployed its WCDMA 3G network solution for Indonesian operator Telkomsel to assess 3G services such as video sharing. The trial network will operate in the metropolitan Jakarta area over a six-month period. The trial reinforces the strong position Nokia enjoys in 3G, having announced supply to 48 WCDMA 3G networks worldwide, including 33 already commercially launched and almost half of those launched in Asia-Pacific.

Under the agreement, Nokia is providing a complete Nokia WCDMA 3G radio and core network, including the 3GPP Release 4 based Nokia MSC Server System and the 3GPP Release 5 based Nokia IP Multimedia System (IMS). The Nokia MSC Server System enables operators like Telkomsel to simultaneously deploy 2G and 3G services on the same switching system.

Nokia's 3G trial deployment also comprises GSM core network elements and the Nokia UltraSite Supreme Node B base stations, as well as the Nokia Preminet Solution for delivering hosted data services over the network.

Deliveries have been completed, and the system is fully operational. Nokia is also providing a comprehensive system integration project as part of the trial network deployment.

"WCDMA will give us a strong evolutionary path from 2G to 3G, allowing us to bring our customers world-class high-speed data services," said Bambang RO, Director Business Development, Telkomsel. "We are looking forward to trialing Nokia's end-to-end system and especially to see what its system means for the offering of attractive services such as video sharing."

"We are extremely pleased to be supporting Telkomsel as it enters the era of 3G," said Arjun Trivedi, Account Director, Networks, Nokia. "With the Nokia core and radio access network and the Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem, Telkomsel can offer its customers video sharing, bringing them exciting opportunity to share moments with friends far and wide. We will do our utmost to continue enabling high-quality mobile services in this growing and important market."

Video Sharing is a new multimedia service that enriches 3G mobile users' communication by allowing them to share a live camera view or a video clip while speaking on their mobile. It provides the users with an instant way of adding a visual element into a phone conversation. Video Sharing is based on standardized 3GPP and IETF technologies and is enabled by the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) core network infrastructure currently being trailed by Telkomsel. The capabilities of Nokia's market leading radio network provides the highest quality access for the video sharing service.

Nokia is a world leader in mobile communications, driving the growth and sustainability of the broader mobility industry. Nokia connects people to each other and the information that matters to them with easy-to-use and innovative products like mobile phones, devices and solutions for imaging, games, media and businesses.
