GreenCine & DivX, Inc. Announce Online Film Festival Grand Prize Winners

SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- GreenCine (www.greencine.com), the pioneering Video-on-Demand and DVD Rent-by-Mail company with an unsurpassed collection of independent, international and classic films, and DivX, Inc. (www.divx.com), the company that created the patent-pending DivX(R) video compression technology, today announced the Grand Prize winners of the GreenCine Online Film Festival, presented by DivX, Inc. The award-winning films were selected by distinguished jurors in the categories of Documentary Feature and Narrative Feature. In addition, an Audience Choice Award was bestowed on the film given the highest rating in ballots cast by the Festival's online audience.

"The first-ever GreenCine Online Film Festival was an incredible opportunity for talented filmmakers to present their work to audiences across North America," stated Jonathan Marlow, GreenCine's Director of Content Acquisitions. "With this and other efforts, we've created a viable distribution avenue for feature films that effectively supplements, and in some instances entirely replaces, traditional distribution models." Festival finalists were available online throughout June, with the filmmakers receiving a percentage of the profits made from downloads.

The 2005 Narrative Feature Grand Prize was given to Red Cockroaches, a futuristic thriller written and directed by Miguel Coyula. The 2005 Documentary Feature Grand Prize was given to Empire of Juramidam, a profile of unconventional religious practices directed by Colum Stapleton. The Narrative Competition judges were RES Magazine's Holly Willis, Lawrence Inglee of the Mark Gordon Company (The Day After Tomorrow) and Jerome Rota, the original designer of DivX technlogy. The judges for the Documentary Competition were David Kopple of the Gersh Agency, documentary filmmaker Mark Kitchell (Berkeley in the Sixties) and NPR commentator and author Hollis Gillespie.

The 2005 Audience Choice Award winner was Security, written and directed by Rob Nilsson. A special Eclection Award was also given to the film Peep Show, directed by J.X. Williams and restored by Noel Lawrence.

Both Grand Prize winners will receive $2,500 and remain available for download on GreenCine until July 5, while the Audience Choice winner will be awarded $1,000. In addition, the documentary winner Empire of Juramidam and special award winner Peep Show will screen together theatrically on July 6 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
