Close Encounter of the Foo Fighters Kind:
- Foo Fighters and Rhapsody to Hold Exclusive, Free Concert in Roswell, New Mexico
- 500+ Foo Fighters Fans to Be Transported to Area of Mythical UFO Crash and Salvage
- Foo Fighters' In Your Honor to Stream Free Through Rhapsody 25 Starting June 14
LOS ANGELES and SEATTLE, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In celebration of the band's 10th anniversary and the June 14 release of their fifth album, In Your Honor, Foo Fighters announced today that they are teaming with RealNetworks(R) Inc.'s (NASDAQ:RNWK) Rhapsody(R) music service to give 500 lucky fans an exclusive, free performance on June 18th in Roswell, New Mexico. The private, invite-only event also celebrates the recent launch of Rhapsody 25, a new music service that lets anyone enjoy up to 25 free songs each month and legally share music with friends -- no strings attached.
The exclusive event will take place on the site of the former Walker Air Force Base. The base is where the U.S. government allegedly stored evidence from the crash of a mysterious unidentified flying object in July 1947. The concert will also be webcast live by Real for anyone to enjoy at http://guide.real.com/ .
"Offering fans free music isn't alien to Real," said Rob Glaser, chairman and CEO of RealNetworks. "We're excited to join the band in giving fans this one of-a-kind free music experience. Rhapsody 25 allows anyone to get a taste of Foo Fighters' genius and share the experience with friends -- easily and legally."
Roswell is a special place for Foo Fighters, who named their record label Roswell Records as a tribute to the infamous "Roswell incident." The band took its name from similarly mysterious unidentified glowing balls that Allied and German pilots reported seeing at night during World War II. The pilots dubbed these objects "foo fighters," after a popular comic strip of the era.
"This is a long overdue and historic moment for this band," says Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl. "Despite being in a band called Foo Fighters, having a label called Roswell Records, and being a total UFO nut, I have never been to Roswell, NM. So the fact that we finally get to go to Roswell and play a gig in the same hangar where they allegedly stored the remains of the 1947 UFO crash blows my mind. I can't think of a better way to celebrate the band's 10 year anniversary."
In Your Honor is the fifth album from the four-time Grammy-winning Foo Fighters. Being released June 14th on Roswell/RCA -- a decade after their first album -- In Your Honor features two CD's: one with some of the heaviest, loudest material the band has ever recorded; the other comprised of largely acoustic, subtly laid back songs with guests ranging from Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones to Norah Jones (no relation!). The two-disc opus splits the difference of the signature Foo Fighters balance of thundering aggression and lady-killing melodic tenderness. The chemistry that has made it possible for "All My Life," "Everlong," "Times Like These" and other classic Foo Fighters songs from their four previous outings to impact listeners equally in acoustic and electric incarnations is pushed to separate extremes and distilled into their purest forms. The result is the record that Dave Grohl wants Foo Fighters to be remembered for and defined by for generations to come.
Fans will be able to listen to the new album and Foo Fighters' four previous platinum-plus albums -- Foo Fighters, The Colour and the Shape, There Is Nothing Left To Lose and One By One -- for free through Real's Rhapsody 25 music service.
To celebrate the band's tenth anniversary, Real and the band will fly several hundred lucky sweepstakes winners and their guests from select cities in the U.S., including New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Minneapolis, to Roswell via chartered planes to attend a world-class barbecue and enjoy a free, private concert from the multi-platinum band. By correctly answering a series of Foo Fighter-related trivia questions through local radio promotions, fans will be eligible to win a trip to the concert. In addition, a national sweepstakes will be held on the Rhapsody web site at www.rhapsody.com. Immediately following the concert, winners will be whisked back to various cities via the same chartered planes that took them to Roswell.
The free Foo Fighters show is the second in a series of free concerts that RealNetworks will sponsor throughout the year, celebrating the successful launch of the new Rhapsody service. The company will announce additional concerts in the series in the coming months. Rhapsody 25, which was introduced to the public just weeks ago, lets music lovers everywhere listen to all their favorite tunes and share them with friends, all for free and all legally.
