NRSC Unanimously Approves Technical Standard for HD Radio(TM) IBOC Digital System

NRSC Unanimously Approves Technical Standard for HD Radio(TM) IBOC Digital System

COLUMBIA, Md., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- iBiquity Digital Corporation, developers of the HD Radio(TM) In-Band On-Channel (IBOC) system, congratulated the National Radio Systems Committee (NRSC) for unanimously voting to implement the technical standard for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the United States based on the HD Radio system. The IBOC system was previously recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for digital broadcasting systems in the AM and FM bands.

"We applaud the NRSC's decision to adopt an IBOC standard based on iBiquity's HD Radio system," said Robert Struble, President and CEO, iBiquity Digital Corporation. "We also commend them for the years of diligent analysis and research they've undertaken in reaching this decision. Their endorsement is a key milestone in the establishment of HD Radio as the digital radio solution in the U.S. and, ultimately, other countries." Over 2,500 radio stations in the U.S. are in the process of converting to the HD Radio system and over 300 HD Radio broadcasters are currently on the air. On average, a station a day is upgrading to HD Radio digital technology.

HD Radio technology transmits digital audio and data alongside existing AM and FM analog signals, allowing listeners with HD Radio receivers to enjoy crystal-clear reception and CD-quality sound. Unlike other digital broadcasting technologies, HD Radio works within the existing analog spectrum, allowing unused spectrum to be preserved for future needs. Through this approach, HD Radio technology enables AM and FM radio stations throughout the world to transition to digital broadcasting in a seamless, non-disruptive manner. The technology also provides a platform for advanced interactive features that include: multicasting (multiple channels broadcast on a single FM frequency), real-time traffic and weather services, scrolling text on the receiver display, and Surround Sound.

The ITU recommended iBiquity's AM and FM IBOC systems for worldwide implementation of digital broadcasting in ITU-R Recommendation BS.1514 and ITU-R Recommendation BS.1114.

Jointly sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the NRSC studies and makes recommendations for technical standards that relate to radio broadcasting and the reception of radio broadcast signals.
