Craft in America Receives a $100,000 Grant From The National Endowment of the Arts

Funds Will Be Applied to the Production of a PBS Television Documentary Entitled 'Craft in America'

LOS ANGELES, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Craft in America Inc., the groundbreaking, multi-media project designed to explore the importance of handmade crafts in American culture, announced the receipt of a $100,000 grant from the National Endowment of the Arts.

The grant from the Endowment's Arts on Radio and Television program will be applied to the production budget of "Craft In America, The Series," a three-part television documentary program that will be broadcast nationally on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

The three, one-hour episodes entitled "Memory," "Community" and "Landscape," will feature stories of prominent craft artisans and will be set against the larger historical context of craft itself. "Memory" will focus on the historical relevance of craft through the eyes of several contemporary pioneers in the field. "Community" highlights the social and emotional connections that crafts embody. The final installment, "Landscape" examines the interdependent relationship of craft artists to their media and the natural world.

Carol Sauvion, founder and executive director of Craft In America, Inc. said, "We are heartened by this important vote of confidence by The National Endowment of the Arts. No exploration of craft and the creativity it involves has ever been presented on television. This grant and recognition goes a long way in our fundraising effort."

Work is also underway on a national traveling exhibition of exceptional craft objects that will make a three-year, twelve-city tour. The project has now raised $1,000,000 of the $2,200,000 needed to produce the television series and a companion website, and is seeking a corporate sponsor for the remainder of the budget.
