Airing on NBC on Sunday, January 23, 2005 from 3:00-4:30 p.m., this year's very formidable competition took place on the magnificent Tom Weiskopf- designed 18-hole Ocean Club Golf Course, offering viewers panoramic views of the lush course and waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The 7159-yard scenic par 72 course challenged the all-star players with island cross winds ... and on the second day of play, Caribbean rain. Since the MJCI began, over $1.5 million has been raised for several worthy causes. This year, in light of the recent tragic disaster in Southeast Asia, the tournament made a $204,000 donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund to help the victims of the Tsunami and the humanitarian crisis it has created. "Many of the participating celebrities were gracious enough to step up and donate their winnings to the Red Cross as well." This year's MJCI kicked off on Saturday, January 15, 2005 with two days, and 36 holes of Celebrity-Only play. Celebrity teams, including Michael Jordan/Mia Hamm, John McEnroe/Brett Hull, Carson Daly/Roger Clemens, Aidan Quinn/Marcus Allen, Julius "Dr. J" Erving/Bryant Gumbel, Damon Wayans/Vince Coleman, Barry Bonds/Dan Jansen, Boris Becker/Lisa Dergan, Ahmad Rashad/Wayne Gretzky, Kenny G/Janet Jones, John Smoltz/Stuart Scott, Boris Kodjoe/Roy Green and Mario Lemieux/Brandi Chastain, competed against one another in the two person scramble format. This year's tournament, marred by torrential rains on the second day of play, was resolved over a best ball playoff on the course's 12th hole. The tournament broadcast features golf by day and parties by night as viewers get the chance to go behind the scenes of all the weekend's festivities. Celebrities and guests were treated to a host of events, including a Bahamian Beach Party, a Saturday night Gala, hosted by comedian Tommy Davidson and featuring guest entertainers Angie Stone and Charlie Wilson, as well as an all-star band under the direction of Greg Phillanganes, and the inaugural MJCI Poker Tournament. Tournament participants, as well as Vivica A. Fox and Dennis Rodman, competed in Texas Hold 'Em play for a $20,000 pot, donated to the charity of the winner's choice. The Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational is presented by One&Only Resorts, and sponsored by Icon International, the Jordan Brand, Friedman, Billings and Ramsey, Gatorade and Golf Magazine.
