Joyce Randolph Releases Sophomore CD, `Just a Little Blue'
Joyce Randolph Releases Sophomore CD, `Just a Little Blue' SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- With the release of her first CD, "I Send Him Roses," in 1995, Joyce Randolph had not yet fully claimed her identity as a jazz singer. Nine years later, the Stanford University music graduate and retired English teacher is in her element as a composer, lyricist, and gifted vocalist. Randolph has just released her second CD, "Just a Little Blue" (Myrlys Music, available at http://www.joycerandolph.com/ and Amazon.com), a collaborative effort with bassist Jeff Chambers and pianist Bill Bell - and early reviews indicate the smooth mix of jazz standards and her original title track is a spellbinding vocal masterpiece. Regarding "Just a Little Blue," Haybert King Houston of "Jazz Now Interactive" says, "Light the candles and fill the glasses, snuggle up to your main squeeze, relax and enjoy a very intimate offering by Joyce Randolph accompanied by the 'Jazz Professor' Bill Bell on piano and the masterful Jeff Chambers on bass. That's what I did and will want to do over and over again." Randolph, who co-produced "Just a Little Blue" with Bay Area jazz radio personality Doug Edwards of KPFA-FM, brought down the house at the CD's release concert. "It was a pleasure to see her again, Sunday, dazzling a standing-room-only crowd at the Hyatt Sainte Claire in support of her second CD," wrote Leigh Weimers, the San Jose Mercury News writer who first profiled Randolph for the newspaper in 1995. "If anything, Randolph's jazzy/bluesy vocals are even stronger than those on her first recording, 'I Send Him Roses.'" "When Joyce sings, the heavens smile," agreed Afrikahn Jahmal Dayvs, jazz director of KKUP 91.5 FM/Jazz Beat Radio. "She embodies the spirits of Ella, Etta, Ethel, Billie, Sarah, Betty and Carmen." Randolph's vocal talent and unique style combining open, honest emotion with a homespun stage presence has made her a fixture of the Bay Area jazz scene. She participated in the Bay Area Jazz and Blues Artists (BAJABA) Showcase in 2002 and 2003, a series broadcast live by KPFA; appeared in the 2001 Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival (2001), the largest free jazz festival in the country; and has performed at the San Jose Jazz Society's Sunday Concert Series since 2001. Randolph's next appearance will be as leader of the Joyce Randolph Quartet at the Santa Clara University "Golden Circle," to be held at San Jose's Fairmont Hotel on January 29, 2005. It is little wonder Randolph has become so popular: "Joyce combines the best of blues and jazz," said Steve Saperstein, San Jose Jazz Society general director. "She has a wonderful stage presence, warm and friendly. She's lived; she sings the truth." Note: Photos and cover art are available upon request. CONTACT: Joyce Randolph Myrlys Music, Inc. P.O.
